Cantoratus Budapestiensis
St. Stephen's Cathedral Boychoir - HU

The Choir of Gentlemen and Choristers at St. Stephen's Basilica was founded in 1995 by the Budapest Cantoratus Foundation to provide musical accompaniment within the liturgy. It sings a service of Vespers every Thursday (at 5.0 p.m.), in which the repertoire is a mixture of Latin settings from the European Renaissance, and Hungarian Gregorian Chant, based on the mediæval Esztergom tradition. The Choristers mainly attend Saint Stephen's Primary School, within which the special Cathedral Choir School was formed in 1998.  Since its foundation the standard of the children's musical education has risen considerably, and their liturgical performances in the Basilica remain an integral part of the curriculum.

The Choir has recorded two CDs. The first, in 2001, contains complete Vespers services in honour of Saint Stephen and for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On it the Choir can be heard singing works by Lassus, Porta, Walther, Festa and Stoltzer, as well as Hungarian Gregorian Chant.  The second disc Dedicatio Ecclesiae, released in 2005 to mark the centenary of the consecration of the Basilica, includes motets by Porta and Gregorian Chant from the Esztergom rite.
